Simple Updates for a Fabulously Festive Home

Simple Updates for a Fabulously Festive Home

28th Nov 2022

It's almost December, meaning it is officially time to get into the festive spirit! Decorating our homes for Christmas is one of the first activities on our advent calendar. Whether you like to decorate your home from top to bottom, or prefer subtle festive touches, we have plenty of ideas to get your home festive ready.

Forage for Foliage

Decorating your home for Christmas doesn't have to be costly, and with the cost of living at an all time high, it's worth looking to nature for inspiration. Have a look at what's growing in your garden or take yourself for a nature walk to collect some natural foiliage to display around your home. From holly to eucalyptus stems, sprigs from a fir tree, bright berries, or pine cones you'll be amazed at what can find - and what you can make with it.

Go Homemade

One of the best ways to celebrate Christmas is by spending quality time with your loved ones. A great way to do this is by making homemade décor elements for your home! Consider handmade paper snowflakes to put on the windows, Christmas ornaments made from scratch, or a hand-crafted mantel garland as fun and artistic activities to do with the family. You'll be able to find numerous tutorials online - check out Pinterest or Instagram for some incredible inspiration, or put on your baking apron and bake a classic with the kids. Or if you prefer to make a day/evening of it, visit a local workshop in your area with your friends and make a fresh wreath for your front door.

Switch Up the Bedding

An easy way to instantly infuse your home with the holiday spirit is by switching up your bedding for more festive alternatives. Cheerful bedding sets are relatively inexpensive, and they’re easy to store since they can fold to take up very little room. Alternatively, add some festive cushions to your sofa and chunky knit throws for a super cosy update.

If you have guests staying with you for Christmas, you could also add some additional festive touches to the guest room such as novelty hand towels, winter scented toiletries or a vase of evergreen stems.

Get Ready for Guests

If you're hosting Christmas this year, you'll want to get your home spic and span and ready for the big day. Complete all of those not so fun tasks and get organised early on, so that you can enjoy the run up to Christmas with your loved ones.

It's worth having a good clear out to make space for new toys, clothes and gifts by creating a charity store of items you no longer want or need. Make sure your kitchen is in good working order - give your oven a good clean, refresh your dishwasher and ensure you have enough serving dishes and utensils for all of your guests on the big day.

It's also a good time to treat your floors and upholstery. For wood flooring, consider oiling the floors to restore them to their former glory, or deep clean your upholstery including carpets, rugs and sofas to make sure they smell fresh and are looking their best for when your guests arrive.

Add Festive Fragrance

There's nothing quite like being greeted by the scent of Christmas when you enter your home. Invest in winter scented candles or diffusers with nostalgic fragrances such as evergreen, warm spice, firewood, and peppermint. Light them as the evening draws in for a truly welcoming environment.
