What is FSC and PEFC certified wood?

What is FSC and PEFC certified wood?

9th May 2023

As our impact on the environment increases to alarming levels, it is more important than ever to ensure that we are all making more conscious choices about where and what we shop. At The Wood Flooring Co. we are committed to minimising our environmental impact. When you buy a floor from us, you can be confident that the wood you are purchasing has been sustainably sourced and produced.

An eco-conscious flooring choice

When you opt for a wood floor, you are naturally making an eco-conscious choice for your home, since wood is a renewable, sustainable resource that can be used without depleting the environment.

As a natural material, the impact on the planet of wood flooring is much lower than that of other flooring options. In particular products made from plasticisers and PVC, such as vinyl or LVT flooring is toxic in production and cannot be recycled (check out or 'No-Vinyl Tile' collection for an alternative!). In contrast, wood flooring is biodegradable and made from natural ingredients that contain no harmful chemicals. Wood also helps to absorb carbon dioxide and can help to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

However, it's important to remember when purchasing a wood floor that not all wood is equal and you should look for global accreditations to ensure that the necessary standards have been met.

What is FSC and PEFC certified wood flooring?

All of the wood and laminate floors we supply at The Wood Flooring Co. are FSC and PEFC accredited. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, while PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Together, these organisations set standards to ensure that wood products come from responsibly managed forests and are harvested in a sustainable way.

FSC certified flooring comes from forests that are managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. This means the wood is harvested in an environmentally friendly way and ensures that local people benefit from the resources of the forest. The FSC label guarantees that the timber used in flooring has been responsibly sourced.

PEFC certified flooring also comes from sustainably managed forests, but with a focus on preserving biodiversity. This is achieved by conserving native ecosystems and promoting regeneration of the forest after harvest. The PEFC label guarantees that the wood used to make flooring has been responsibly sourced and has been certified as meeting environmental, social and economic standards set by the organisation.

When purchasing FSC or PEFC certified wood flooring, it is important to look for the official label. This will help ensure that the product is made from sustainably sourced timber and not illegally harvested timber. It is important to remember that not all wood flooring is made from sustainably sourced timber, and it is up to the consumer to make sure they are buying the right product.

By choosing FSC or PEFC certified wood flooring, you will be doing your part to protect the environment while still getting a beautiful and durable product. Not only are you helping to conserve the forests, but you are also investing in a durable and timeless product that will last for many years.

Our commitment to sustainability

At the Wood Flooring Co. all of our wood flooring is manufactured exclusively by Parador. We keep our supply to one single manufacturer so that we are able to ensure that all sources of raw materials are known down to the wood (origin control), and come from responsibly managed forests.

Additionally, the factory where our wood flooring is manufactured is on track for climate neutral production by 2025 and has made a number of ecological commitments. These include heating the factory using sawdust generated during production, only using electricity from renewable sources, and separating waste at source so that 99% of it can be reused.
