Rustic Floors for Period Homes

3rd May 2023

Period homes today are being returned to their original splendour through a blend of careful restoration and tasteful renovations. Whether you prefer a Georgian townhouse or a rustic cottage, Period properties are full of wonderful original features, from large sash windows and high ceilings, to ornate fireplaces, exposed beams, cornices and wall panelling.

Whether you prefer to embrace a traditional décor style throughout, or gracefully update with contemporary features, this style of property has all of the hallmarks for a wonderful home.

Flooring for Period homes

Flooring in a period home is an important aspect of maintaining its authenticity and historical charm. Whether the home is Victorian, Georgian or Edwardian, the flooring should match the period style to ensure a cohesive design.

Popular flooring options for period homes include wood flooring, parquet, and tiles. Wood floors add warmth and character to a period home, and create a natural, laid back canvas to complement the existing decor. Parquet and herringbone designs in particular are a popular option since these styles date back many years and suit period properties perfectly. For a more classic look, tiles with geometric patterns are an excellent choice for period floor restoration.

Whatever option you choose, choosing a period-appropriate floor and maintaining it with care will help to preserve the beauty and authenticity of your period home

Each collection in The Wood Flooring Co. has been hand-selected by our team of specialists to combine the most tasteful colours and grains with stylish plank sizes, laying patterns and surface finishes for a truly timeless aesthetic.

Discover Handcrafted wood floors

If you like original floor boards and prefer a floor with character, our unique Handcrafted floors in our Heritage Collection may be just what you’re looking for.

These floors have been carved by hand using traditional artisan techniques to create a textured uneven surface. The planks don’t have a ‘flat’ surface but rather they are undulated to add interest and replicate traditional style oak floorboards.

Some of the floors within this collection are further distressed to give the impression of a floor that has been down for years. With surface scrapes, cracks and purposeful dents these planks are brimming with character and celebrate all that is unique about an authentic wooden floor.

Each of our handcrafted wood floors are finished off with a natural oil to beautifully accentuate the deep grain, rich tones and unique surface finishes.

The benefits of engineered wood in a period home

Although these floors have been crafted to replicate traditional floor boards, they offer all of the practical benefits of being an engineered wood.

In contrast to solid wood, engineered wood is made up of multiple layers which make the flooring extremely dimensionally stable and resistant to changes in temperature. It is suitable for use with underfloor heating and highly practical for modern homes.

Manufactured with an easy click-lock installation, our Handcrafted wood floors are super easy to install. This mechanism also ensures that there are no gaps between each board, as would be the case with traditional floor boards.

You would be forgiven for thinking these floors had been down for years, but in reality they are a feat of modern engineering!
